Jacob Thurston served in the Civil War. He died from effects of a wound received in the battle of Cold Harbor, June 3, 1864.

On the day of their marriage Israel Thurston was engaged in farm labor, while Sarah Edwards was busy with household duties in his mother's kitchen. No date had been set for their wedding, but Israel happening to see a minister passing along the country road hailed him, and the marriage ceremony was performed without further preparations.
