A deed dated
Sept. 4, 1789, recorded in the public records of Strafford County at
Dover, N. H., shows that John Edwards, Jr., of Hollis, N. H., purchased
from his father, for thirty pounds, ten shillings, thirty seven acres
of land in Gilmantown, "part of lot No. ten in the ninth range of the
hundred acre lots in said town." This adjoined land which Jonathan, his
brother, bought of his father. I this deed the father reserved for
himself "two acres at the southwesterly corner of said piece of Land I
lately sold to Jonathan Edwards." which reservation he made "for the
pine timber on said two acres of Land or any other use I see fit to put
it to."
The public
records of Belmont, N. H. (original records of Gilmantown, N. H.) give
the following interesting data:-
On the
Selectmen's inventory for 1819 John Edwards was taxed:- 1 poll, 1/3
acre orchard, 2 1/2 acres tillage, 8 acres mowing, 12 acres pasture,
106 acres land with 83 acres unimproved, 3 horses, 2 oxen, 4 cows, 1
two-year old, $50.00 buildings. His highway tax was $9.50, school tax
$3.71, town tax $4.75, state tax $1.61, county tax $0.48.
In the records
for 1820 there is a statement that his lot was divided as follows:- "To
John Edwards 81 acres, to David Edwards 26 acres.
As John Edwards
spent the last years of his life with his daughter, Melinda (page 32),
it is probable that she had possession of the two articles bearing the
Edwards coat of arms.
In the letter to
Col. A. M. Edwards referred to on page 8, David Edwards wrote,-"My
father had two articles which this John Edwards brought from Wales,
that bore the Edwards coat of arms. He likewise had a hammer which had
been handed down generation to generation. I have the hammer; a sister
of mine had the others."
In a letter
written to Jeremiah W. Bennett (page 28) at about the same date, he
wrote,- "These articles were in the possession of my sister, Melinda."
